Discover the Murray River in Australia

The 'Murray' is rich in history and scenic beauty, it has many options for road trip destinations when you are planning your holiday. If you are looking for a relaxing, scenic, tranqil place to unwind and go with the flow type of feeling the Murray River is the place to be.

Many times my family have camped on the banks of the Murray River and we stayed on a houseboat for a week several years ago -best way to describe it is 'Serenity'. Around every turn is a new view, the river red gums are spectacular and the wildlife is everywhere.

All the way along the Murray River are towns that just ooze history and are very interesting as the Murray was a 'water highway' from the mid 1850s till about the end of that century with hundreds of paddle steamers up and down everyday delivering people and goods. Some paddle steamers have been restored and you can have a cruise and imagine what it must have been like all those years ago.

The Murray River is about 2750 kilometres long, starts at the Kosciusko National Park in New South Wales and is the border between NSW and Victoria, it then travels through South Australia and out to sea.

Stunning sunset on the Murray River

"We have stayed on a houseboat for a week on the Murray River near Wentworth in NSW, it was our most relaxing holiday ever! We moved the houseboat each day which usually took an hour or two at the most.

We then went fishing, went for walks on the bank of the river, relaxed, admired the view and the wildlife and took many photos of sunsets, sunrises and more beautiful landscapes."
