"The Port Arthur Penitentiary is an imposing looking historic building, it was used to hold convicts in the late 1850s to the 1870s. Much later in the 1960s the preparation began to keep the site for historical and tourism purposes.
There a many other sections of Port Arthur also worth visiting.
In 1950 a separate solitary confinement prison was built which all the convicts were moved to. There is also the Dockyard where the convicts built boats, there is a beautiful garden to walk through and the the remains of the historic coal mine that the worst convicts worked at."
